Size the Load is an independent English-language publisher for people who need backup power in the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the EU.
Most product pages start with a brand and a watt-hour number printed on a box. We start with the appliances you actually need to keep on — a refrigerator compressor, a CPAP machine, a router, a sump pump — then match a portable power station or modular battery to that load.
We cover portable power stations, solar generator kits, expansion batteries, and plug-in home-backup systems. We do not sell hardware, we do not install electrical systems, and we do not take exclusive money from a single brand.
The site launched in 2026 after the U.S. residential clean-energy credit for most homeowner-owned batteries ended on 31 December 2025. That change made a $400–$4,000 portable or modular station a serious alternative to a $10,000–$16,000 installed pack for a lot of households. Our job is to say when that alternative is enough — and when it is not.
